Directorate of Tourism, Jammu
The Department of Tourism, Jammu and Kashmir is the main developmental arm of the Government of Jammu and Kashmir for overall planning and upgradation of Tourism in different parts of the State.
Over the years promotion of Tourism in Jammu region has been gaining focused attention, especially in the wake of immense potential in pilgrim sector. This being the motivating factor, Jammu and Kashmir Government had bifurcated the Directorate of Tourism on regional basis, as a consequence of which a separate Directorate of Tourism was carved out for Jammu Province in 1996. Since then under the control and superintendence of the Adminstrative Department, efforts are being made to raise infrastructure and take all possible steps to promote tourism on modern lines.
In view of the above, Infrastructure development assumes greater significance for attracting tourists. Therefore, this aspect is being given priority attention by Directorate of Tourism Jammu. The Directorate is trying to promote tourism in such a way that pilgrim influx to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, is diverted to other places of attraction. If this is achieved, optimally, tourism in Jammu will get a big fillip, as the number of pilgrims in recent times has already surged to manyfolds. For luring them to stay put in the region, this directorate is taking various steps to ascertain that the peripheral destinations are fully equipped with infrastructure and facilities on modern lines.
Apart from tapping pilgrim tourists, the Directorate is endeavouring to make adventure and sports tourism attracted for targetted people. The Mughal road has opened up vistas for the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch. These will be harnessed optimally alongside tradional tourism destinations across the region.
Sudh Mahadev, Budda Amarnath, Shiv Khori, Shahdra Sharief and Nangali Sahib are also serving as complements to the attractions of the region.
For achieving desired and time bound results Establishment, Planning, M&W, Finiance/Accounts and Publicity sections of this Directorate are putting in guided and best possible efforts. The RTI and Personal Sections of the Directorate are equally important, which gets focused attention.
